The Best Places to Visit in Singapore in September

September falls just outside of the busy summer months for tourism in Singapore, making it a great time of the year to visit. With hot weather throughout the year, September's weather is no different, but it does happily fall outside of the monsoon season which starts in October, making it one of the driest months.

Check out our recommendations below for more information on what to see and do in Singapore in September.

1. Learn Regional History at the Singapore Asian Civilisations Museum

Singapore is home to some incredible museums, and the Asian Civilisations Museum should definitely be on your list. It is one of the best museums in the world for Asian antiquities and art, with exhibits, talks, as well as temporary displays.

We suggest getting a tour guide to take you through the different floors covering stories of 5,000 years of trade, into globalization, Asian port history, and Asian craftsmanship. The museum has objects and tells stories from all over Asia, and you will learn about more than just Singapore.

Other incredible museums include the National Museum, which you can read more in our piece covering visiting Singapore in May, and the Peranakan Museum, which we explore in our piece about visiting Singapore in January. These are particularly good to put on your list should you hit a rainy day.

2. Take a Family Photo at the World-Renowned Merlion

Not far from the Asian Civilisations Museum you will find the Merlion, one of the biggest icons of Singapore. It is a statue of a mythical creature, combining the head of a lion (because Singapore was originally known as Singapura, meaning 'lion city' in Sanskrit), and the body of a fish, as a nod to its historic fishing village roots. The statue stands tall over the Singapore river with water spouting out of its mouth.

The statue was originally unveiled in 1972, and was relocated in 2002 to its current location outside the Fullerton Hotel, overlooking Marina Bay. This is because construction of the Marina Bay waterfront blocked its views at the original location at the mouth of the Singapore river.

The Merlion today is often used as a logo for Singapore, being used for sports team, advertising, and branding of the nation. You will also find it depicted on souvenirs. It's a great spot for a family photo.

Did you know that the Merlion featured in the Crazy Rich Asian movie? You can also find it in the popular Nintendo game Animal Crossing, in many manga books and TV series, and it has featured in Mario Kart.

3. Eat at a Hawker Center like a Local

Singapore is famous for its cuisine, and there are no better places to try traditional Singaporean dishes than one of its many hawker centers. These are food courts with many different stalls, and tables to sit at in the middle, meaning you can grab dishes from many different vendors and enjoy them all together.

We recommend dishes such as chicken rice, originally brought over to Singapore by immigrants from Hainan, or chili crab, which are crabs stir fried with, you guessed it, chili. Other dishes include seafood laksa, chicken satay, pork ribs, char away teow, nasi lemak, and roti prata. Getting a little of everything is the best course of action to ensure you sample the most dishes.

Hawker centers are found all over Singapore, from the basement or top floors of shopping centers right down to the beaches of the East Coast area. We suggest Maxwell Hawker Center, Newton Food Center, Amoy Street Food Center or East Coast Lagoon Food Center.

If you are a big foodie, why not let Asia Highlights plan a food tour especially for you? This way you won't miss out on any authentic Singaporean dishes without having to do all of the research yourself!

4. Enjoy Singapore's Formula 1 Grand Prix

Singapore is also home to a Formula 1 Grand Prix, which happens on October 3–5 in 2025. The tracks are in Marina Bay, and the Marina Bay Street Circuit covers 4.94 kilometers, or 3 miles, in 62 thrilling laps.

You can get tickets for three days to include the practices and the final race, or for just a single day, if that's what you prefer.

The Singapore race is often considered to be one of the more challenging and unique tracks on the calendar, and thus a not-to-miss for fans of Formula 1. Since the races started here in 2008, the track has been known to feature at least one safety car in every race edition.

The track is not far from Arab Street, where you can enjoy the beautiful Haji Lane and Sultan Mosque before or after the race. You can read more about what to do in this area in our article about visiting Singapore in March

Low Season: Less Expensive and Fewer Crowds

September is low season for tourism in Singapore, with fewer crowds. This also means prices are slightly lower for accommodation and transport, but due to Singapore's popularity year-round we do recommend booking ahead still.

In September, Chinese Singaporeans also celebrate the Mid-Autumn Festival (October 6 in 2025, and September 25 in 2026). While not a public holiday, this celebration was traditionally to mark the harvest season, and you might see mooncakes around, a food traditionally eaten during this time. If you want to try them, we suggest checking out some of the local Singaporean bakeries.

What to Wear in September

With Singapore being hot throughout the year, advice for September is similar to that for the rest of the year: we suggest packing lots of loose fitting, light-colored clothing made of mostly natural fabrics. Cottons and linens work best in this weather, particularly dresses, shorts, t-shirts, and short-sleeved blouses.

Due to the mix of sunshine and chances of showers, we also recommend bringing an umbrella to protect against the rain and the sun, as well as sunglasses, a hat, and sunscreen. Supportive footwear is also a must for those looking to walk around lots.
