The Best Places to Visit in Singapore in August
August is a busy time of the year to visit Singapore. With hot weather and occasional showers, this month falls outside of the monsoon season. We suggest planning a mixture of indoor and outdoor activities, to ensure that you get to enjoy the outdoors but also avoid getting too warm by cooling off inside occasionally.
1. Check out the Wildlife and Enjoy Nature at MacRitchie Reservoir
As Singapore's oldest reservoir, MacRitchie reservoir is worth the visit for those interested in nature and wildlife. Having been named after the British engineer who played a big role in setting up the first fresh water supply in Singapore, the reservoir is a protected area.
The edge of the reservoir has part of Singapore's 2 square kilometers of primary forest that is still standing today, and boardwalks take you around the reservoir and through the forest. There are signs to show the way, making it easy to find your way, and routes range between 3 and 11 kilometers in length.
There are also monkeys at MacRitchie Reservoir, which are cute, but we do recommend being careful. They are known to take things from you, as they are used to stealing food off visitors, so we suggest being careful with your valuables along the trails. It's also important not to show your teeth to monkeys (they perceive this as aggression), and not to chase them.
If you are a regular jogger or runner and visiting Singapore, this is also a great spot for your run while on your trip. If you want to see another nature reserve, we recommend Bukit Timah Nature Reserve in our article about visiting Singapore in July, which is also great to visit in August.

2. Visit Haw Par Villa and Hell's Museum
While this may sound like an interesting (or odd) suggestion, hear us out. Haw Par Villa is one of Singapore's oldest parks, and was built by the philanthropist behind Tiger Balm. It was a major attraction in the 1970s and 1980s, and is part of Singapore's cultural heritage. Before television and shopping malls, Singaporean kids would visit and learn about morality and folk history there.
Haw Par Villa, previously known as Tiger Balm Gardens, is full of statues and dioramas depicting Chinese legends, literature, as well as depictions from Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism. The park's most famous attraction is the gruesome 10 Courts of Hell, which shows the depictions of hell from Chinese mythology as well as in Buddhism. If you are traveling with very young children make sure they are prepared for some interesting scenes.
The most recent addition to Haw Par Villa is Hell's Museum, a museum showing a comparison of the ways that different ancient and modern cultures portray hell, as well as the differences in death and dying internationally.
We suggest taking a tour guide to ensure you understand all displays, because the museum is full of fascinating exhibits. If you want to go with a tour guide, we can help arrange an expert to answer your questions throughout the day, and can also organize transportation for you if you wish. For fans of museums, we also recommend the National Museum of Singapore in our article about visiting Singapore in February, or the Peranakan Museum, which we recommend in our article about visiting Singapore in January. Both are great to visit in August too.
3. Enjoy Endless Views over Singapore from the Singapore Flyer

Singapore's skylines are iconic, and there is no better place to enjoy them than from the Singapore Flyer, a giant observation wheel at the edge of the Singapore River.
The entire wheel takes approximately 30 minutes to rotate, and you'll be able to spot the famous Merlion, Marina Bay, and Raffles Place. For those visiting in the daytime or on a clear day, you will even be able to see as far as Changi Airport or into Malaysia.

4. Take a Boat Down the Singapore River and Eat Dinner at Chijmes
The Singapore River has been Singapore's source of life for at least 200 years, and the river passes by many of the historically famous quays that kept Singapore's trading business flourishing.
Today, the river goes through some of the most popular areas of the city and you can take a lovely boat cruise along it. You'll be given some historical and contextual information during your ride, and going in the evening is a great time to enjoy the lights and nightlife. You will also be able to see the Merlion from a little closer by. You can read more about visiting the Merlion in our article about visiting Singapore in April.
Afterwards, we suggest going to the nearby Chijmes and picking a restaurant to eat at from the great selection there. Chijmes is a historic building in the heart of the city, which previously was home to a Catholic Convent. It is a national monument, and is home to delicious restaurants as well as many places to sit down and have a drink after your city exploration.
End of High Season: More Expensive and More Crowded
August falls at the end of Singapore's summer-crowds season between June and August. As a result, prices are likely to be higher, and there are also more crowds at the popular tourist sights. We suggest booking transportation and accommodation ahead of time to avoid disappointment.
What to Wear in August
Singapore is hot all of the year, and August is no different. We recommend bringing your summer wardrobe, including light-colored clothing that is loose fitting, and ideally made of natural fabrics to beat the heat. This includes linen shorts, summer dresses, and t-shirts or short-sleeved tops.
Bringing an umbrella as well as sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses is a good idea, and wearing supportive footwear will ensure you can enjoy your trip to the fullest without sore feet.
